Field note 01 · Night

On porch lights and moths

Every night, a temporary city gathers around the bulb. Wings arrive from the dark and orbit the light as if it were a tiny moon that appeared just for them.

There are moths with powdery wings, beetles that land like thrown seeds, lacewings almost too delicate to believe, and the occasional creature that looks as though it has been waiting millions of years for someone to finally notice it.

The porch light is not nature, exactly. It is an interruption. But it becomes a meeting place anyway. A border crossing between the human house and everything moving beyond it.

Stand there long enough and the night stops feeling empty.

Some things are worth building simply because one particular person would understand them.
